Tottenham center-back Cristian Romero found himself in the transfer spotlight in September, with reports linking Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Manchester United to a possible move for him over the summer.
Recently, TBR Football reported that Tottenham plan to meet with Romero in the coming months to discuss a new contract, spurred by the growing interest in the Argentine defender.
While Romero is content at Tottenham, he’s reportedly voiced concerns about the club’s lack of UEFA Champions League football—a point he’s raised several times over the past six months.
With clubs like Real Madrid and PSG able to offer regular Champions League action, Tottenham may face a challenge in retaining the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner.
Could Tottenham really sell Cristian Romero?
Football Insider reported on Friday, citing sources, that Tottenham will expect a “huge” offer in negotiations for Romero.
Tottenham are reportedly open to letting Romero leave if they can secure a suitable replacement. Former club scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that there are now questions surrounding the 26-year-old’s role in the team.
“If the interest from Real Madrid is genuine, they’ve got a decision to make,” Brown told Football Insider. “There are some concerns about him at Tottenham because of their defensive issues.
“Now, there are a number of reasons for those issues, and the blame isn’t solely on him, but as a big part of that defense, there are question marks about his performances. He’s also error-prone which is something the team can’t really afford to carry in their situation.
“If you look at teams like Arsenal and Man City, the top teams, their stability is built on players like William Saliba and Ruben Dias. These are players that you know, in the heart of your defense, you can rely on. Is Romero that sort of player for Tottenham? Not for me.
“So I think they could look [and] think, ‘If we can get big money, we’ll take it and reinvest in a player who might provide that stability.’ It might not be worth the risk of destabilizing the back line unless it’s big money though, it needs to be enough to reinvest properly.”
Although there’s no specific asking price set on the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner, Transfermarkt estimated his value at €65 million.
