Tottenham complete record move for Irish teenager – just hours after convincing fellow teenage star Mathys Tel to join on loan from Bayern Munich

Tottenham have completed a deal for St Patrick’s Athletic striker Mason Melia.

Melia, 17, becomes the second teenager to sign for Spurs in the space of 24 hours after they finalised a loan move for Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel on deadline day.

St Patrick’s – who play in the League of Ireland – confirmed the transfer on Tuesday evening, as they revealed Melia will be joining Tottenham for a record fee for an Irish top-flight player.

A club statement read: ‘St Patrick’s Athletic can confirm we have agreed the transfer of Mason Melia to Tottenham Hotspur for an undisclosed fee, which is a record transfer fee for a League of Ireland player.

‘Mason, who turns 18 in September, will remain at Richmond Park for the 2025 League of Ireland season, and will move to Tottenham on January 1st 2026.’

Melia holds a number of records at St Patrick’s, having become their youngest ever league starter at the age of 15 in 2023.

He is also the youngest goalscorer in St Patrick’s and the League of Ireland’s history after netting multiple times before his 16th birthday.

His current record at St Patrick’s stands at 10 goals in 54 senior appearances.

He has also played for Republic of Ireland Under-17s, and earned his first Under-21 call-up in October.

Melia will not arrive in north London for another 11 months, but it is another sign that Spurs are intent on building a side for the long-term future.

Ange Postecoglou has already put his faith in teenagers such as Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Mikey Moore this season, while 19-year-old Oyindamola Ajayi came off the bench to score his first senior goal in a 3-0 win against Elfsborg last week.

Melia is the fourth signing of the winter window for Spurs, joining Tel, goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and centre back Kevin Danso.
