Time to end Gaza war – US

Israel has achieved its stated goals regarding the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has argued

Israel has done to Hamas what it claimed it intended to do and should now stop its military operations in Gaza, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday.

Israel besieged the Palestinian enclave in October 2023 after the militant group based there launched an incursion into southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages. Amid the intensive bombardments and ground invasion by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), at least 43,000 people have reportedly been killed. Almost seven in ten of the UN-verified deaths were women and children, its Human Rights Office reported last week.

“[Israel] said that it needed to dismantle the military organization of Hamas and to get the leadership that was responsible for October 7th,” Blinken told journalists in Brussels. “It’s done both of those things. So this should be a time to end the war,” he added, speaking a day after meeting Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer.

Even if West Jerusalem is unwilling to call off its troops, it should meet its humanitarian obligations, the top US diplomat said. If it does, Washington has an exit plan and will “make sure that Hamas is not going back in.”

Netanyahu accuses Israeli media of ‘witch hunt’

Last week, Qatar confirmed that it had suspended its US-backed mediation between Hamas and Israel. Doha is not willing to get involved unless the parties “show their willingness and seriousness to end the brutal war,” its foreign ministry said.

Former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reportedly said during a private meeting with hostage families that the IDF has “nothing left to do in Gaza.” Israel is staying in the enclave “because there is a desire to be there,” sources quoted him as saying last week. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Gallant on Tuesday last week, citing “breach of trust.”

The Israeli leader is pursuing an “ethnic cleansing” of Gaza, the left-leaning newspaper Haaretz has alleged. Netanyahu is “responsible for the war crimes committed by the IDF… the expulsion of the Palestinians, the destruction of their homes and the preparations on the ground for a prolonged occupation and Jewish settlement,” it claimed in an editorial last Sunday.

The Gaza campaign has also led to Israel’s current military operations in Lebanon against the militant group Hezbollah. The death toll in this parallel conflict in Lebanon has reached 3,287 since October last year, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
