One of the many hobbies for billionaires these days seems to be getting into team ownership in professional sports, especially in the NBA, with franchises coming up for sale more frequently as values skyrocket.
The Phoenix Suns are one of the most recent teams sold in the NBA, with Mat Ishbia buying the team for $4 billion, a deal that also included the purchase of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.
As new owners in the NBA tend to do after taking control of their franchise, Ishbia was aggressive in his efforts to improve the team as he went on to approve the blockbuster trades for Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.
Although the Suns have had their fair share of problems with their new-look roster, Ishbia has been busy trying to build his ownership empire, as he and his brother Justin Ishbia reportedly have set their sights on buying a baseball team, namely the Minnesota Twins.
“A source briefed on the situation confirmed that Justin Ishbia and his brother, Suns and Phoenix Mercury owner Mat Ishbia, are interested in buying the Twins from the Pohlad family, which began exploring a sale in October after 40 years of ownership. Bloomberg first reported the Ishbias’ interest in the Twins,” according to The Athletic.
This is a bold move and a lot to take on, with many moving parts in Phoenix and Minnesota, but clearly something the Ishbia family feels it can handle.
It will be interesting to see what the Twins franchise sells for and whether the Ishbia brothers are the ones who acquire the team.
