Stephen A. Smith is never afraid of stating his opinion, no matter who it upsets.
Right now he is very opinionated about his view of the Phoenix Suns.
Speaking on “First Take,” via Legion Hoops, Smith said the Suns are “soft” and that is the main reason why they are fighting to trade for Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat.
Smith said:
“Nobody gives a flying frog’s fat you-know-what about the Phoenix Suns, we don’t care… Why do they want Jimmy Butler so bad? Because they need a rough rider in that locker room… They’re soft.”

Smith thinks that Butler could act as the team’s “rough rider,” but what does that really mean?
Butler is definitely a tough player, someone who isn’t afraid of competition and, like Smith, speaks his mind.
Even now, Butler has created controversy by being so honest and public about his desire to leave the Heat.
Would the injection of Butler help the Suns, who are still floundering in 12th place in the West with a 16-18 record?
They already have a lot of talent led by Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, but perhaps Butler could transform the team’s chemistry and make them a more competitive squad.
The problem is that the Suns don’t have a lot of options when it comes to acquiring Butler.
They are trying to offload both Jusuf Nurkic and Bradley Beal, although Beal’s no-trade clause in his contract makes that extremely difficult.
They’d love to have Butler on board, not only for his basketball skills but also for his driven and “rough” nature, but it won’t be easy.
