Serie A | Lecce 1-2 Lazio: Match Report

Lazio secured a dramatic 2-1 victory against 10-man Lecce, with Adam Marusic scoring the decisive goal in the 87th minute. This win was essential for the Biancocelesti, who were still reeling from a heavy 6-0 defeat to Inter Milan, despite having shown strong form in Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the Europa League prior to that match.

Taty Castellanos made his return from suspension, while Lazio faced injury challenges with Patric and Matias Vecino sidelined and Alessio Romagnoli not fully fit. Lecce also had key players missing, including Andy Pelmard, Kialonda Gaspar, Lameck Banda, and Joan Gonzalez.

The match featured several near misses. Manuel Lazzari tested Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone with a powerful shot from the edge of the area. Ivan Provedel, Lazio’s keeper, was called into action as well, saving a fierce volley from Tete Morente. A goal-line clearance by Lassana Coulibaly was crucial to keep Lecce in the game after a header from Gustav Isaksen.

As the first half drew to a close, Castellanos had a shot parried at the near post, and his follow-up was cleared off the line by Frederic Guilbert’s arm. This instinctive move resulted in a red card for Guilbert and a penalty kick awarded to Lazio, which Castellanos confidently converted.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Lecce managed to equalize shortly after halftime when Tete Morente struck a volley into the bottom corner from outside the area. Lazio continued to press for a winner, with Mattia Zaccagni coming close on several occasions.

Ultimately, it was Marusic’s volley that clinched the victory for Lazio after a poor clearance by Morente set up the chance. The goal sparked celebrations among Lazio fans, although Matteo Guendouzi noted that an object was thrown towards them during the celebration.

Lecce nearly found an equalizer in stoppage time when Mohamed Kaba’s header hit the crossbar, and Santiago Pierotti could not convert the rebound. Tete Morente also threatened with a long-range effort that skimmed the crossbar as time expired. This hard-fought win allowed Lazio to regain some much-needed confidence as they look to move forward in their campaign.
