In a candid interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Daniele Rugani has shed light on his summer departure from Juventus and his new chapter at Ajax. The defender spoke openly about his conversation with new Juventus manager Thiago Motta and his gratitude towards his former club.
Thiago Motta’s Honesty
Rugani revealed that Thiago Motta was straightforward about his plans for the team. “Thiago Motta was very sincere and direct with me on the first day of the training camp: he told me that I wasn’t part of the technical project,” Rugani stated. He appreciated Motta’s honesty, adding, “One may or may not agree with the choice, but I appreciated Motta’s sincerity; he was clear and correct with me. It would have been much worse to live in doubt for two months.”
Despite the disappointment, Rugani harbors no ill feelings towards Juventus. “I have digested everything, I bear no grudge against Juve: relations with the club are excellent,” he affirmed.
New Beginnings at Ajax
Rugani expressed his contentment with his move to Ajax, praising his new coach, Farioli: “He’s a young coach, but I’m certain he will have a great career: he pays attention to details, he’s meticulous in match preparation. A wonderful discovery.”
The defender is focused on making the most of his time in Amsterdam. “I’m doing well, and I dream of returning to the national team,” he said. “I’m concentrating on having a great second half of the season with Ajax, as a protagonist. We’ll see in June…”
Reflections on Juventus
When asked about Juventus scouts potentially watching him, Rugani responded, “I hope everyone watches me, not just those from Juve but also those from other clubs, including Ajax.”
He also commented on his former teammate Manuel Locatelli: “I’m in touch with my friend Locatelli, and I’m happy that he’s finally being praised after so much unfair criticism: he’s a great player and has Juve DNA.”
Rugani acknowledged the changes at Juventus, stating, “The club implemented a total revolution in the summer, so it will take time. But it’s normal for people to expect more and always want to see Juventus at the top.”
Despite leaving shortly after renewing his contract, Rugani remains grateful to Juventus. “I knew it wasn’t a guarantee of staying. I will always be grateful to Juventus,” he concluded.
