Roma’s Friedkin revolution: From Antonello to Balzaretti and Ranieri

Calciomercato detail how the Roma of the future will have a completely different face from the current one. As this tumultuous season comes to an end, the Friedkin family aims to close a chapter, turn the page, and start anew with fresh foundations both on and off the field. The choice of Claudio Ranieri to replace Ivan Juric symbolizes this new philosophy that will lead to an authentic overhaul, a true revolution, affecting many managerial roles as well.

Alessandro Antonello is set to become the new CEO of Roma, filling the void left by Lina Souloukou’s departure. The club has been in talks with various profiles, but negotiations with Antonello, currently the corporate area CEO at Inter, have reached a decisive stage. The only remaining step is for Antonello to conclude his relationship with Inter before signing with Roma.

In the sporting area, Federico Balzaretti’s return to the club has already been announced. The former Udinese sporting director and ex-Roma player and executive will rejoin the club’s organizational chart as Loan Manager from January 2025. He will oversee and monitor the progress of players on loan and serve as a new scout for the transfer market department.

Florent Ghisolfi will remain the key figure for upcoming transfer windows in his role as head of the sports area. Much will depend on the evaluation of his work this January and in the coming summer, but the former Nice executive won’t be alone. Claudio Ranieri, currently on the bench but effectively serving as an English-style manager for the first team, will stay by his side. Ranieri will advise the Friedkins and Ghisolfi in choosing the new coach and evaluate potential transfer market acquisitions.

This transformation won’t be easy, given the limited budget and well-known financial fair play issues. However, much of Roma’s future will depend on these changes and the new structure being put in place by the Friedkin family.
