During the summer, there were a number of reports linking Xabi Alonso with a move away from Bayer Leverkusen.
While a possible departure to Bayern Munich was heavily documented, Liverpool and Real Madrid were also both potential options for the Spaniard.
Nevertheless, Alonso elected to remain at the BayArena, a decision that may have influenced his star midfielder, Florian Wirtz.
The 21-year-old has also been linked to several top European clubs, with Der Rekordmeister and Los Blancos are the two sides leading the charge for his signature.
Regardless, Manchester City remain in the race for Wirtz’s signature, and a move away from Leverkusen appears around the corner.
The same could be said for Alonso, whose defence of the Meisterschale appears to be already a tall order with Die Werkself sitting nine points away from the Bundesliga’s summit.
The Spaniard continues to be endlessly linked with the Real Madrid job, but could Wirtz follow him to the Spanish capital?
Speaking to Sky Germany, Leverkusen midfielder, Robert Andrich, explained how he views the future of the pair:
“Everyone knows how good Flo is. How consistent Flo is for his age. How quickly he got back to such a high level after his injury. I am sure he is ready for the next step. Whether he leaves next summer or the summer after that… that is up in the air.”
“We don’t have the feeling that Xabi is thinking about leaving Leverkusen. There are always rumours about players and as soon as it comes to a coach, it is celebrated even more. He gives us the feeling that he is always at the top of our team and wants to achieve a lot with the club.”
