Revealed: When Liverpool and Everton might be able to play their postponed fixture after Storm Darragh saw Merseyside derby called off

Everton’s Premier League game with Liverpool was postponed after Storm Darragh hit Merseyside on Friday with amber severe wind warnings.

The fixture was originally set to be played at 12:30 GMT on Saturday 7 Dec but will have to be rescheduled to a later date.

An Everton statement read: ‘Following a Safety Advisory Group meeting at Goodison Park, attended by officials from both clubs, as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council this morning, it was decided that, due to the risk to safety in the local area due to strong wind gusts, and an amber severe wind warning that remains in place until 6am on Sunday, today’s fixture should be postponed on safety grounds.

‘Information relating to a rearranged date for the fixture will be announced in due course. All tickets purchased for the original fixture will remain valid for the rearranged fixture.’

If Liverpool finish in the top eight positions in the Champions League table, they would avoid two games in the knockout phase play-offs on February 11-12 and February 18-19 2025.

Everton do not have a game on either of these dates, meaning that this would likely be the earliest date that the fixture could be rescheduled to.

The Premier League has also set two midweek fixture slots for postponed matches: April 22-23 and May 13-15 2025.

Unless both teams are eliminated from the FA Cup before then, it is possible that the game could be replayed on one of these dates.

The decision for the game not to go ahead was taken by local authorities and not the two clubs.

Storm Darragh is wreaking havoc across the country with winds of up to 92mph causing travel chaos, damage and leaving thousands without power.

The game’s postponement comes as millions of Britons have been warned to stay indoors after the storm arrived in the UK on Friday night.

The Met Office has issued a rare ‘danger to life’ red wind warning for the early hours of Saturday, with ‘significant disruption’ expected between 3am until 11am across most of the coast of Wales and parts of south-west England.

However, at this moment, no other Premier League fixtures have been called off and fixtures are expected to continue as planned.
