Reba McEntire Accidentally Consumed 25mg Gummy While Looking After Her Late Mother
Reba McEntire recalls the time she accidentally overindulged in a 25mg gummy while caring for her late mother.
Reba McEntire shared a funny yet cautionary tale about infused gummies during her appearance on the October 28 episode of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
The Queen of Country recounted the time she accidentally overindulged in a 25mg gummy while caring for her late mother, Jacqueline, who was battling bladder cancer before her passing in March 2020.
The incident took place in January 2020, when Reba McEntire traveled to Oklahoma to spend time with Jacqueline and give her siblings—Alice, Pake, and Susie—a break from caregiving duties.
Reba McEntire Recalls The Time She Accidentally Overindulged In A 25mg Gummy
While there to support her mother, the "Fancy" singer found herself in an unexpectedly humorous situation, learning firsthand the importance of dosing carefully with infused gummies.
"Alice told me, she said, ‘Now, if Mama starts hurting tonight when y’all go to sleep, give her one of these gummies.’ And I said, ‘Okay, alright.’ And I said, ‘The whole thing?’ She said, ‘Yeah, the whole thing,'" Reba said, per PEOPLE, while on the late-night talk show. "Well, I wasn’t really comfortable with that."
The country music singer then told Fallon, "So, when we started going to bed, I said, ‘Mama, let’s get ahead of this pain. I’m gonna give you half of this.’ She said, ‘Well, what do I do with it?’ I said, ‘Put it in between your cheek and your gum like a dip of Skoal or something,’ you know? So, she did, and boy, she just went to sleep."
Reba added, "I thought, ‘Well, shoot. Mama’s taking it. I need to see what she’s experiencing.’"
Reba McEntire's Previous Experience With Gummies
Before that experience, Reba said she did not have much experience with gummies. "Maybe one time, you know, like two milligrams or something like that," she said, adding that she "took the other one and laid down, went to sleep."
Later that night, Reba recalled how she "felt the bed move" and "looked over" to realize her mom needed to use the bathroom. "I threw back the covers — and that’s about as far as I got. And I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I gotta help her. I’m gonna look like a wimp if I don’t,'" she told the late-night talk show host. "So, I thought I’m either gonna crawl over the bed or I’m gonna walk around."
Reba McEntire Details The Events That Followed
Reba decided to keep herself moving, offering herself some pep talks as she carefully made her way over to her mom, and, as she put it, “finally made it.”
However, she revealed that this wasn’t even the most challenging part of the experience.
"I said, ‘Are you okay?’ She said, ‘Yeah, I’m fine,’ and then she reached over and said, ‘Can you get me some more ice water?’ And I said, ‘Ice water, okay,'" the singer said. "So, I held it, and I looked at the door, knowing that’s a long way away — I got the hall and then the kitchen."
Reba McEntire Said The News Would Have Had A Field Day If Something Went Awry
In that moment, the "Reba" star admitted her mind "fast-forwarded" to a dark and humorous place, imagining the potential headlines if things went awry: “Reba McEntire found in her mother’s kitchen, ice all around.”
"I thought, ‘Ain’t no way I’m going that way.’ So, I just turned back to Mom, and I said, ‘Here you go.’ And she took a sip, and she said, ‘Ugh, where’s the ice?’ And I said, ‘We’re out.’ She said, ‘We’re out of ice?’ I said, ‘Yeah,'" she said, admitting to her own "horrible" behavior.
She was able to get her mother back in bed before crawling over and laying back down. "I swear there was weeds and flowers growing out of my head," Reba said. "So, the next day I ask everybody, ‘How many milligrams were in those things?’"
Reba later learned each full gummy contained 50 milligrams — presumably of THC, though she didn't specify. "I took 25 milligrams. Gave my mom 25 milligrams. Still took care of Mama!"
Reba McEntire Replaces Blake Shelton On 'The Voice'
Reba McEntire's journey with "The Voice" first began back in 2011, when she appeared as a battle advisor for Team Blake Shelton during the show’s inaugural season. Fast-forward to February of last year, and Reba returned as a mega-mentor, lending her expertise to contestants heading into the high-stakes knockout rounds.
In a surprising twist, Reba revealed in 2020 that she had initially been offered a coaching position for the very first season of "The Voice," a role she ultimately turned down, which then went to Shelton.
Fate had other plans, however, as Reba now finds herself in Shelton’s former coaching spot after he announced his retirement.
