Sky Germany reports that RB Leipzig are closing in on the permanent signing of Xavi Simons, who is currently on loan at the club from PSG.
Simons is expected to sign a contract at Leipzig until 2027 with Leipzig set to pay a fee of €50m plus bonuses. The bonuses in the deal could take the fee to over €80m, but it is unlikely to reach that point. The 21-year-old has been on loan at Leipzig from PSG for nearly two seasons now.
The reason that Simons will not be given a long-term contract is that it cannot be ruled out that he will be sold in the summer. On top of this, if Leipzig fails to qualify for the Champions League, then the Dutch international will leave in the summer, on the other hand, if Leipzig remains in Europe’s premier competition then a medium-length contract extension cannot be ruled out either.
The 21-year-old is no doubt Leipzig’s most influential player on the pitch and his influence was greatly missed following his injury that kept him out until the beginning of this year. Xavi’s permanent arrival will smash Leipzig’s current transfer record which is held by teammate Loïs Openda who joined from RC Lens in 2023 for €40m.
