Hilario’s departure brings and end to his 18-year association with the Blues having first arrived at Stamford Bridge as a player in 2006. He went on to make 39 appearances for the Blues before he retired in 2014. Hilario returned two years later as an assistant goalkeeping coach under Antonio Conte before he was promoted by Maurizio Sarri in 2018. However, he will now get his chance to test himself as an international coach with Tuchel and England. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca had already anticipated Tuchel would come calling for a number of his staff after his England appointment was confirmed and even name-dropped Hilario as one. “I know that one of them has been approached; one of the analysts,” Maresca said in October. This is the only thing I know. “We are open-minded in terms of allowing people to take chances and also we are happy to keep people who want to stay and if they want to go, they can go.” Maresca won’t have to look far to replace Hilario given he has Michele De Bernardin, who arrived with him from Leicester City in the summer, and former Blues gloveman Willy Caballero at the club.
