Portsmouth confirm fan has died after Middlesbrough clash was suspended due to medical emergency
A Portsmouth fan has sadly died after being taken ill in the stands of a Championship clash on Saturday. The fixture between Pompey and Middlesbrough was due to kick off at 3pm at Fratton Park but was delayed as a result of a medical emergency. They wrote: “Portsmouth Football Club are devastated to report that a Pompey fan has died following a medical emergency at Fratton Park today. “The incident happened right at the start of the game, with the referee taking the players off the pitch to allow for treatment to be administered. “Despite the valiant attempts of the emergency services, the supporter unfortunately passed away. “Next of kin are aware. Our sincere thoughts and condolences go out to the supporter’s family and loved ones at this sad time. “We are grateful to all the Pompey and Middlesbrough fans inside the stadium for the compassion, patience and understanding they showed in such distressing circumstances.” Shortly before 3pm the players had made their way onto the pitch for the league fixture and were set to get the game underway, however those plans were quickly shelved. Just a matter of seconds after referee Gavin Ward blew the whistle to start the game, he blew again to stop proceedings. Fans made way to make space for the medical emergency crews to attend the fan, while large blankets were held up to protect the supporter’s privacy. This meant that kick-off was delayed while the fan was tended to with players initially remaining on the pitch and kicking balls between themselves. It was then announced that the game would start at 3.35pmX However the players of both teams were then led off the pitch around five minutes later and taken back to the dressing rooms. A message was then played to fans to thank them for their patience and understanding with the delay. Portsmouth took to social media and wrote: “There’s been a delay to kick-off at Fratton Park due to a medical emergency in the crowd.” Meanwhile Middlesbrough posted: “The start to today’s game has been delayed due to an apparent medical incident in the home section of the crowd. “We will update in due course.” After 25 minutes of treatment the fan was stretchered down the tunnel at Fratton Park and out of the stadium as fans of both sides respectfully applauded. It was then announced that the game would start at 3:35pm. It meant that the game was delayed by 35 minutes before it eventually got underway. The result means that Michael Carrick’s side drop out of the play-off places while Pompey remain in the drop zone only by goal difference.
