Sky Germany reports that after Borussia Dortmund’s late 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim on Sunday, head coach Nuri Şahin questioned the mentality of his side.
Following Jacob Bruun Larsen’s late equalise, Şahin asked the Dortmund squad:
“Are you winners?”
The former midfielder first asked left-back Ramy Bensebaini, then midfielder Marcel Sabitzer and finally captain Emre Can. There is said to be no motive behind the selection of players, but Can still replied to the head coach with:
“Obviously not, if we are eighth…”
Other things continue to both Şahin as well such as the body language of the players and the fact that during the Hoffenheim game, the visitors were superior to Dortmund in large portions of the game. On top of this, Şahin struggles to solve an age-old problem at the Signal Iduna Park where the players are too inconsistent in their performances as seen with the performance against Bayern Munich and their subsequent draws with Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hoffenheim.
Despite all of this, Şahin still receives the backing of the bosses at Dortmund despite the club sitting eighth in the Bundesliga. In their final game of the year, Dortmund travels to Wolfsburg and a win could see them, at best, end the year in fifth. If they do not win, and results go against them, they could end the year as low as 11th.
