Spain head into the quarter finals as women’s football’s reigning world champions and Nations League winners, and are odds on favourites to add the European title to that in just over a week’s time in Switzerland this summer.

Montse Tome’s side qualified from Group B with three wins out of three, scoring at least three more goals than any other team in the tournament after 5-0, 6-2 and 3-1 wins over Portugal, Belgium and Italy respectively.

La Roja head into the last eight on an eight-match winning streak, scoring 35 goals in that period at an average of just shy of 4.5 per game.

Despite establishing themselves as the dominant force in world football at the moment, the Spanish only once made it beyond the last eight at the Euros, which came way back in 1997, and have fallen at the quarter final stage in each of the last three European Championships.

Hosts Switzerland made it through to the quarter finals of their home competition in dramatic circumstances after scoring a 92nd minute equaliser against Finland to secure their place in the knockout stage.

Pia Sundhage’s side headed into the final match knowing a draw would be enough to see them through to the quarter finals of a major tournament for the first time ever, after recovering from an opening day defeat to Norway with a 2-0 win over Iceland in their second game.

The Swiss have only won two of their last 12 matches in all competitions, of which they’ve lost seven, leaving them heading into Friday night’s clash as heavy underdogs for an upset.

Spain have won all of their last four meetings between the two nations since 2012, winning 5-1, 5-0 and 7-1 in the last three times they’ve come across each other, the latter of that trio being the most recent meeting in Zurich in a Nations League clash in October 2023.
