Mohamed Salah ‘to be beaten to Premier League award’ despite equalling all-time record
Alexander Isak is the rumoured Premier League Player of the Month for December despite Mohamed Salah’s record-equalling efforts. Isak was in a rich vein of form during the festive period as Newcastle climbed up the table following a fluctuant set of results. Isak is said to have won the Player of the Month awardGetty The Swede scored eight goals for the Magpies and assisted another two across six outings in December, four of which ended in wins. Isak was therefore named as an unsurprising nominee for the Player of the Month and appears to have won the award. X account @FutSheriff, who previously revealed that Cole Palmer won it for September the day before its announcement, posted the news today. Isak now looks set for his first ever Premier League Player of the Month award since signing for Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022. He will have beaten Trent Alexander-Arnold, Morgan Gibbs-White, Dean Huijsen, Jacob Murphy, Palmer and Antonee Robinson. Salah, who won in November, was also nominated but has seemingly missed out this time round even though he had a stunning month. The Egyptian scored seven goals and assisted another seven across six league appearances in an unbeaten December for Liverpool. His total of 14 goal contributions equalled an 11-year record for the most involvements by a Premier League player in a single month. Former Liverpool star Luis Suarez was the last to do so in December 2013 when he scored ten goals and assisted a further four. Salah has won six Premier League Player of the Month awards, the joint-second highest tally with Cristiano Ronaldo and Steven Gerrard. Salah equalled a stunning record in December but looks set to miss outGetty The 32-year-old’s victories have come in November 2017, February and March 2018, October 2021 and 2023, and November 2024. Another victory would put him on seven and level with joint leaders Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane. Salah could even claim a record eighth this season but may have to win the award in two of the next five months to achieve it. The winger’s contract at Liverpool is due to expire at the end of the season and he claimed in November that he’s ‘more out than in’. He cast further doubt over extending his future at Anfield earlier this month when he said there is no progress regarding a new contract. Salah has been the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia as Al Ittihad saw a whopping £150million bid rejected for him in September 2023. Salah has already won the award this season and could do so againGetty Al Hilal are also keen and want to sign him before the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. Salah has scored 21 goals for Liverpool this season in all competitions and assisted another 17 to make him one of the country’s leading players.
