AC Milan’s recent setback in Serie A, a 1-1 draw at home against Cagliari, has left a bitter taste in the Rossoneri camp. This stumble, coming shortly after impressive comebacks against Juventus and Inter that secured Milan’s eighth Italian Super Cup, has prompted the club’s leadership to take action in the transfer market.
The task force comprising Zlatan Ibrahimovic, senior advisor to RedBird ownership, CEO Giorgio Furlani, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada, is now focused on reinforcing the squad. Their primary target appears to be Kyle Walker, the 34-year-old English right-back currently with Manchester City.
Walker’s potential departure from City was confirmed by manager Pep Guardiola, who revealed the player’s desire to explore options abroad to conclude his career. Milan currently leads the race for the defender, whose contract with City expires in June 2026.
However, pursuing Walker presents a strategic dilemma for Milan. Due to Serie A regulations for the upcoming season, signing the former Tottenham and Aston Villa player would preclude the acquisition of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United, as clubs are limited to registering only one British professional player from abroad.
Milan’s interest in Walker is driven by his experience and defensive versatility, qualities that could significantly bolster Conceicao’s backline. This move gains additional importance as both captain Davide Calabria and veteran Alessandro Florenzi could potentially leave the club as free agents on July 1st.
The Rossoneri are advancing negotiations with Walker, with ongoing talks set to continue into next week. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, new contacts are expected in the coming days, with Milan hoping to secure Walker on a free transfer.
Spanish outlet Relevo reports that Milan is preparing a substantial contract offer for Walker, aiming to fulfil his desire for a new European adventure after eight years at Manchester City. As the situation develops, it’s clear that Ibrahimovic and the Milan management are pulling out all the stops to bring the experienced defender to San Siro, potentially reshaping their defensive lineup for the challenges ahead.
