Paulo Fonseca blamed the referee for the recent defeat against Atalanta. He was adamant that Charles De Ketelaere fouled Theo Hernandez on the opening goal. He directly attacked referee Federico La Penna afterward. The Milan brass supports his complaints.
According to Corriere della Sera, the referees’ association let it be known that the decision on the pitch was correct. Some want the coach to be suspended for his remarks. The federal prosecutor will look into it. The matter could be resolved with a plea bargain.
Fonseca accused La Penna, who also officiated the game between Udinese and Milan when Tijjani Reijnders saw red in a very questionable call, for disrespecting his team and having an agenda against the Rossoneri.
Per Calciomercato, the Rossoneri hierarchy is fully behind the coach. On the other hand, they wish for this kind of thing not to become an alibi for the dissatisfactory position in the standings. The higher-ups believe to have put together a squad that could challenge for the Scudetto. While that’s likely out of the window already, the manager needs to get his men going to be a real contender for the top four.
Our Take on Fonseca
They made their bed once they hired it and confirmed him when there was a window to usher in a new manager. Now they are in too deep and there are too many key matches in rapid succession to pull the plug without making things worse. It hasn’t been all bad, but their lack of consistency and the fact that his tweaks only last for so many games are maddening.
