Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay recently spoke to the BBC, reflecting on his journey from Manchester United to Serie A. The Scottish international opened up about his decision to leave his boyhood club and embrace a new challenge in Italy.
“It was a big decision, but in some ways, it was quite straightforward,” McTominay explained. “I saw passionate fans, the coach, and the players. I saw an opportunity in them and I took it. I don’t look back. I knew it was what I wanted, and I have no regrets. When I set my mind on something, that’s it. Nothing can take me back.”
The midfielder expressed his fondness for his new surroundings: “I love this place, I love the fans and my teammates. It’s been a pleasure to share this with Billy Gilmour every day; we’ve helped each other a lot.”
Addressing his departure from Old Trafford, McTominay acknowledged the complexity of the decision: “Leaving Old Trafford was a decision made by me, the club, and the manager. It’s not easy for a club to make such a decision with a player who grew up in the academy.”
McTominay also shared the emotional toll of his final day at Manchester United: “My last day in Manchester was complicated, especially when I had to say goodbye to everyone. But football and life are like that… I then spoke with Ten Hag, and he expressed his thoughts on the situation. I told him to listen to me, that it was my career and that I was there to push it forward.”
The midfielder emphasized the importance of following his instincts: “I had to follow my gut and do what I wanted with my career, without letting external factors hold me back.”
Despite the move, McTominay’s affection for his former club remains strong: “I love Manchester United to death; it has been my life for 22 years. But now we move on, and I’m really enjoying myself at Napoli.”
