Martha Stewart got a little pushy on The Drew Barrymore Show, but the moment was all in good fun.

During Stewart’s appearance on Barrymore's talk show on Tuesday, Nov. 12, Barrymore asked the lifestyle mogul what makes her feel soft and gooey. The question briefly stumped Stewart, 83, who mulled over the question.

“What makes me soft and gooey? Soft and gooey,” she mused, adding, “Treatment.”

“Soft and gooey treatment,” repeated Barrymore as she gently rubbed Stewart’s shoulder. “When you’re treated like a lady.”

“Of course. It’s nice,” replied Stewart, telling Barrymore, “You’re the wrong gender.”

After her humorous quip, Stewart playfully pushed Barrymore, 49, away. The daytime host exaggeratedly fell back on the couch as the audience laughed and clapped.

While Stewart built a lifestyle empire, she has made room at times for love. She was previously married to Andrew Stewart, whom she wed in 1961 and divorced in 1990. (The two share daughter Alexis Stewart.)

In an interview with PEOPLE in 1995, Martha’s mother, Martha Kostyra, admitted that the divorce “badly wounded" Martha, adding, “I don’t think she’ll ever get over it."

Martha, for her part, told PEOPLE in 2020 that she was motivated to move on with her life following the split.

"Getting divorced was a terrible thing for me, because we were the first to divorce in my family," Martha said. "And that we haven’t spoken since the divorce is even more painful. But I’m very strong, and I’m very motivated to get on with life."

In addition to being romantically linked over the years with Anthony Hopkins and Mort Zuckerman, the former CEO of U.S. News & World Report, Martha dated Charles Simonyi — cocreator of Microsoft Word  —  for 15 years, from 1993 to 2008, after they initially developed a friendship.

In Martha, the Netflix documentary about her life, Stewart described Simonyi as a "total genius" and called their break up a “second divorce,” although the two never married.

Though Simonyi simply referred to Martha as his “friend,” the pair were often spotted attending events together.

"We started to go everywhere together. It was a different kind of life," Martha said in Martha. "He had his own jet, he was building a boat in Germany and I started working on the boat with him."

Simonyi remained supportive of Martha during her 2004 trial, where she faced criminal charges for allegedly lying about a 2001 stock trade. (She was eventually convicted.) The couple reportedly split in February 2008, with Martha sharing in Martha that life after prison was “less exciting” — a factor that led to the breakup.

During an appearance on E! Insider Shop With Martha Stewart in 2023, the resilient entrepreneur shared her thoughts on how she previously approached work and love.

“If I analyze my life, I think the work has taken precedence over the romance,” Stewart said then. “I have a hard time making room for both and it's not the highest priority that I have a boyfriend, but it would be nice.”
