Inter Milan President Beppe Marotta has expressed his desire to remain with the club for the foreseeable future in a wide-ranging interview with Sky Sport. The interview, part of a documentary titled “L’anno dell’Inter” (Inter’s Year), covered various aspects of the club’s operations and Marotta’s role within it.
Inter’s European Resurgence
Marotta highlighted Inter’s return to prominence on the European stage, stating, “At the European level, Inter has returned to being one of the most authoritative protagonists. The history and achievements of this club tell us that many trophies have been won, so we have returned to the stage most befitting our history. At this moment, with the new ownership, we are giving continuity to this situation.”
Gratitude to Oaktree and New Responsibilities
The Inter president expressed his gratitude to the new ownership, Oaktree Capital Management, for their trust in him. “First of all, I must thank the ownership for giving me immediate trust, greater responsibility by appointing me president of a club like Inter. It’s something extraordinary for my career, always looking at an Inter that is winning and full of good results,” Marotta said.
He added that his new role hasn’t changed much, except for an even greater dedication and commitment to the club.
Praise for Simone Inzaghi
Marotta had high praise for Inter manager Simone Inzaghi: “Inzaghi has proven to be a great professional and an intelligent person. He arrived at Inter on tiptoes, without making proclamations. He grew as he achieved results, gaining awareness of his own abilities. He is a leader, he knows how to instill a culture of work, passion, and a sense of belonging.”
Squad Strategy and Italian Core
Discussing the team’s composition, Marotta emphasized the importance of balancing youth and experience. He also stressed the significance of having a strong Italian core in the squad: “A strong Italian core is fundamental, I believe the results demonstrate this. In Italy, the championship is unique; nowhere else is there this pressure.”
Future Transfer Market Guidelines
Looking ahead to future transfer windows, Marotta outlined the club’s strategy: “In the next season, we will guarantee maximum competitiveness through players younger than those of today, but who also represent quality, professionalism, and assets.”
He elaborated on the guidelines set by Oaktree: “We must seek economic and financial sustainability. This sustainability comes through guidelines. What are they? The squad must respond to economic limits from the point of view of labor costs, the average age must guarantee investing in young people who represent an asset, and contribute to giving sustainability.”
Long-term Commitment to Inter
When asked about his future with the club, Marotta expressed his contentment and ambition: “Yes, I’m happy at Inter, so I hope to deliver results and contribute to achieving them.”
Champions League Aspirations
Reflecting on past Champions League final losses with Inter and Juventus, Marotta emphasized the importance of ambition in sport: “I believe we must always guarantee the opportunity to be there, after which you win or lose. We must pursue being there at the right moment; it’s not an act of arrogance, but of sporting ambition. In sport, you have to be ambitious, otherwise you don’t win.”
