Man City in perfect position to make January transfer window signings after making record revenue
Manchester City have announced they have posted Premier League record revenue figures to add some seasonal cheer amid their current woes. And it could be bad news for their title rivals, with the club’s January transfer kitty boosted at just the right time to help end Pep Guardiola’s headache. After a period of doom and gloom there could be reasons for Pep Guardiola to smile next monthGetty City announced on Friday the club’s revenues grew by £2.2million from £712.8m to £715m based on their latest accounts which ran to 30 June 2024. The growth occurred despite Guardiola’s men falling short in their quest to retain the Champions League crown – losing to eventual winners Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage. However, their successful defence of the Premier League title coupled with FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup successes did provide City with progress on the pitch. The club confirmed that wages dropped a whopping £10.3m to £412.6m, with City recording an overall pre-tax profit of £73.8m. There was financial gain recorded on the transfer front with a staggering £92.8m profit on the sale of striker Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid, as well as the departures of Joao Cancelo and Liam Delap. And there was further good news as commercial revenue increased from £341.4m to £344.7m. It all means that Manchester City have recorded a profit every season since the 2014/15 campaign, with the only blemish on their spreadsheet being the COVID-affected 2019/20 season. The club is currently in the process of a £300m expansion of the North Stand that will take the capacity at the Etihad Stadium to 60,000 ahead of Euro 2028. Meanwhile, a new women’s training facility will be opened during the 2025/26 season. The news will make good reading for Guardiola ahead of the January transfer window as he aims to prevent City’s season spiralling out of control. Speculation over a move for Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes continues to fester and the Brazilian would go some way to plugging the gaps left in the absence of Rodri. Guimaraes was high on Guardiola’s list of summer recruits and Newcastle are anticipating an approach from City in January for their star midfielder. City have won just one of their last ten games and are rueing injuries to key stars, most notably, Ballon d’Or winner Rodri. The club’s latest setback came in midweek in a 2-0 defeat to Juventus which leaves City in grave danger of dropping out of the Champions League at the first hurdle. Up next is the Manchester derby at home to neighbours United who, despite their own difficulties this season, can close the gap to City to just five points with a win at the Etihad on Sunday. Guardiola’s men remain eight-points adrift of runaway leaders Liverpool, having played a game more.
