The Gunners entered the game without a recognised striker after Kai Havertz was ruled out for the remainder of the season through injury.
In the absence of an out-and-out centre forward Leandro Trossard was tasked with leading the line at the King Power Stadium.
The Gunners hunted for an opener throughout the opening half but were unable to break down the host’s defence.
Ethan Nwaneri proved a consistent threat in the visitors’ forward line and he came close to opening the scoring in the closing stages but his strike crashed off the post.
The breakthrough would finally come in the final ten minutes as Nwaneri’s cross found Mikel Merino inside the penalty box before the Spaniard headed home from close range.
After a break from defence Merino was again on target to seal the victory on 87 minutes.
