Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic’ future at the club looks increasingly uncertain, as the Bianconeri contemplate a potential January sale amid growing concerns over his performance and financial impact. The Serbian forward, once hailed as the future of Juventus’ attack, now faces an uncertain future in Turin.
Calciomercato report that the Bianconeri’s initial plans for the January transfer window focused primarily on defensive reinforcements. However, recent injuries and a lack of consistent goal-scoring have forced a shift in strategy, with the club now considering offensive additions as well. Arkadiusz Milik’s latest setback has only exacerbated the need for reliable attacking options.
Vlahovic’s situation is complex, with both tactical and economic factors at play. Manager Thiago Motta’s preferred style of play doesn’t seem to align perfectly with Vlahovic’s characteristics, leading to an inconsistent relationship between coach and player. More crucially, Vlahovic’s contract, set to expire in June 2026, has become a significant financial burden for Juventus.
The striker’s annual net salary of €12 million, which translates to approximately €23 million gross without the benefits of the growth decree, is at odds with the club’s current cost-cutting measures. The Elkann family’s new industrial plan emphasizes reducing annual costs, and Vlahovic represents the highest impact on the balance sheet in terms of both salary and amortization.
Juventus acquired Vlahovic from Fiorentina in January 2022 for over €85 million. While his book value has decreased to less than half that amount, the club would still require a substantial offer to avoid a significant capital loss. As of December 31, 2024, Vlahovic’s residual value on the balance sheet was approximately €29.5 million, expected to decrease to around €19 million by June 30, 2025.
Contract renewal discussions have stalled, with the next meeting between Juventus’ sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli and Vlahovic’s agent scheduled for February. The club aims to reduce the fixed portion of his salary while maintaining overall compensation through bonuses or by spreading the current amount over a longer period. However, Vlahovic is reluctant to accept lower terms.
The situation bears a striking resemblance to the Federico Chiesa saga, where Juventus risks having a player clearly outside the technical project, marginalized, and potentially sold at a discount to avoid losing him on a free transfer. As the January window progresses, Juventus must navigate this delicate situation carefully, balancing financial prudence with sporting ambitions.
