Speaking in Friday’s press conference, Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that Oliver Baumann will start in goal for Germany when they host Bosnia and Herzegovina in Freiburg on Saturday evening.
“Oliver will start tomorrow. Alexander Nübel will start on Tuesday. Both have done very well in training,” said Nagelsmann, who is without Marc-André ter Stegen after Germany’s No. 1 underwent surgery in September after suffering a ruptured patella tendon during Barcelona’s La Liga win against Villarreal.
Ter Stegen was made Germany’s No. 1 following the international retirement of Manuel Neuer after Germany’s European Championship campaign. The Bayern Munich stopper made 124 appearances for the national team over a 15-year spell but after Euro 2024, passed the baton to his successor.
But with Ter Stegen out, Baumann appears to be a favourite of Nagelsmann, even with Nübel in the squad. Manchester City’s Stefan Ortega is also a member of the current national team setup, while Kevin Trapp, although not in the squad, remains an option for future announcements.
