His controversial Saudi adventure was quickly turned sour as he struggled to adapt to life in the Middle East following his £12million switch.

He came under fire for his decision to move to Saudi Arabia from some fan groups after Henderson had previously expressed support support for LGBTQ+ causes.

During his time in English football, Henderson was a strong advocate for the Rainbow Laces campaign aimed at supporting inclusion in sport while also on occasion, sporting a One Love armband.

Fans were left outraged by his decision play in a country where same-sex relationships are illegal.

Upon signing for Ajax, Henderson claimed he felt hurt by the criticism and subsequently issued an apology to anybody who had felt let down by his Saudi switch.

Henderson said: “If anyone was offended or feel as though I upset them, that’s on me, that was my decision and I apologise for that. It was never my intention.

“I just want to look forward now and concentrate on being the best player I can for Ajax. My beliefs have never changed and never will. Again I can only apologise if people feel let down.”

The midfielder had hoped his Saudi departure would keep the door open at international level having been a regular fixture under former boss Gareth Southgate.

But it proved to be too little too late with his return to Europe failing to provide the impetus needed to force his way back into the squad for Euro 2024.

Henderson has not given up hope of representing the Three Lions again in the future and he will hope that like Angel Gomes at Lille, Ligue 1 will not prove to be a barrier to international recognition.
