The Los Angeles Lakers are free-falling.

J.J. Redick now has a big stain on his résumé, and while it’s not entirely his fault, he needs to find a way out of the mess he got himself into.

That’s why, following their 41-point blowout loss to the Miami Heat, the first-year coach threw his players under the bus and demanded some accountability from them as well (via Open Court Basketball):

“I’m embarrassed. We’re all embarrassed… It’s not a game I thought we had the right fight, the right professionalism… I own this, but need some ownership on the court as well. There’s not a sense from me that we’re together right now,” said Redick.

The retired sharpshooter claimed there was no way to scheme effort, and he might be right.

Some had doubts about whether Redick would be able to tame his well-known character and temper and deal with the egos and responsibilities that come with being an NBA coach, and this is going to be perhaps the biggest challenge he’ll face this season.

But as much as sending this kind of message might not make him the most popular guy in the locker room, it needed to be said anyway.

The Lakers are just going through the motions.

Their effort on defense has left plenty to be desired, and the Heat ran into uncontested layups over and over, even when the game was still pretty much within reach.

There are ways to win and ways to lose, and the Lakers have lacked fight or pride over the past couple of games.

And even though they still have a winning record and clearly aren’t as bad as the two latest scores have shown, it’ll take some effort from the players to turn things around.
