The 35-year-old has been a key player for the Welsh outfit since linking up at the Racecourse in 2023 from Wigan. He proved key in the club earning promotion to League One, and has been an almost ever-present figure as Wrexham look to earn promotions in three successive seasons. But McClean, who was appointed as Wrexham’s skipper last summer, could be ruled out of Thursday’s clash against title rivals Birmingham with Phil Parkinson’s side to host the table-toppers. In the build-up to the eagerly-anticipated fixture, Wrexham announced that a player was tended to following an accident. A club statement read: “Wrexham AFC can confirm that a first-team player has been involved in a car accident this morning on his way to training. “It was a single car accident with no other vehicles involved and the relevant local authorities were quickly present at the scene. “The player reported to the Club this morning and will undergo further medical checks.” Thankfully for McClean, he is alleged to have suffered no serious injuries from the accident. North Wales Police said in a statement: “Shortly before 9am this morning (Wednesday, January 22), we received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on the A534 in Wrexham, near to Wrexham Golf Club. Full-time scenes at New Meadow showed the ex-Sunderland star trying to confront the home supporters, before being stopped by security. He subsequently took to his Instagram story where he fired a shocking insult as he responded to the viral clip. The former Stoke man said: “In fairness if I was born and raised in Shrewsbury, I’d probably be this angry as well cause it’s an absolute cesspit full of inbreds.” RexIt remains to be seen whether the versatile midfielder will miss his side’s clash with Birmingham on Thursday[/caption] It was only on Tuesday which saw Wrexham boss Parkinson urge the EFL to do more to combat the abuse McClean receives from fans. He remarked: “Occasionally the level of abuse goes too far and I’m not sure enough is done about it. “People are quite quick to jump on the back of players for stepping out of line and referees are quick to give people yellow cards. “Then I think what are the EFL doing about the level of abuse Jimmy gets on a week to week basis and for me it’s nowhere near enough. “But unfortunately I don’t think my words are going to be enough to change that.” Though the EFL have gone out their way in their bid to stop abuse directed towards McClean by allowing the player to leave the pitch via the shortest route to the tunnel.
