Inter Milan midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan recently gave an extensive interview to Corriere della Sera, discussing various aspects of his life on and off the pitch, as well as setting future goals for the Nerazzurri club.
The Armenian player started by explaining the meaning of his surname, which in Italian translates to “consolation, comfort.” He then reflected on Inter’s Champions League final appearance last season, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to reach that stage again. “Everyone thought City would score four goals against us, but we played very well and deserved to draw and even win. Returning there would be a dream, even if the road is longer than two years ago. But we believe in it: we are confident we can get there again,” Mkhitaryan stated.
When asked about prioritizing the Champions League or Serie A, Mkhitaryan emphasized that all objectives are equally important for the team. He acknowledged a challenging start to the season for himself but remains optimistic about improvement. “Despite my experience and desire, I started very badly. It’s not easy, and I didn’t expect it, but I’m finding myself and I’m doing quite well. I’m very critical of myself,” he admitted.
Addressing concerns about the team’s performance compared to last season, Mkhitaryan said, “We are doing our best and giving 100%. We know we’ve conceded many goals and haven’t taken advantage of all our chances, but we’re working to reach last year’s level. Many want to win this championship, us first and foremost.”
The midfielder dismissed concerns about age affecting the team’s performance, stating, “Age is just a number, and if we don’t win a game, it’s not because of age.” He shared some of his secrets for staying young, including proper sleep, a tailored diet, and consistent training.
Mkhitaryan also discussed his approach to using technology, his experiences with former coaches like Jürgen Klopp, and his academic achievements, including two degrees in Sports Management and Economics. He emphasized the importance of intelligence both on and off the field.
Regarding his role as an Armenian icon, Mkhitaryan expressed his desire to raise awareness about his country. “I’m trying to become an icon for people: by knowing me, they get to know a bit about Armenian history,” he said.
The interview touched on personal aspects of Mkhitaryan’s life, including growing up without a father and his relationship with current Inter coach Simone Inzaghi. “He’s good as a coach and as a person, and I’m not saying that because he’s my coach. I joke with him, but I know the limits,” Mkhitaryan said of Inzaghi.
