The Dallas Mavericks are the defending Western Conference champions and are in fourth place in the West with a 17-10 record, but many feel they’re a bit short of being a true championship-caliber team.
They have arguably the NBA’s best backcourt with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but they lack perimeter defense, and they could use a little more reliable frontcourt scoring.
Per Evan Sidery, they’re expected to look to make a move on the trade market by using their 2025 first-round draft pick as capital.
The Mavericks are a team to watch as buyers on the trade market.
Dallas has shown a willingness to discuss draft compensation in exploratory talks to land an impact addition.

There aren’t a ton of attractive players who will reportedly be available on the trade market this season, but there are a few nice complementary players who could move the needle for a team such as Dallas.
There have been rumors that they’re interested in Jimmy Butler, the aging Miami Heat star forward, but he will likely be too expensive for them.
Kyle Kuzma of the Washington Wizards, a player they were close to landing last season, could be available, as will Dorian Finney-Smith, a former Maverick, and Cameron Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets.
Johnson, in particular, is a player who could elevate the Mavs into true contender status.
He’s averaging 19.2 points a game on 48.9 percent field-goal shooting and 43.1 percent from 3-point range, and while he certainly wouldn’t put up that kind of scoring volume with the Mavs, he could be a nice outlet for Irving and Doncic.
During last season’s NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics were successful in trapping and corralling both stars, and they could use someone who will step into the open spots on the court and make teams pay for such defensive tactics.
