In a press conference introducing new AC Milan coach Sergio Conceicao, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, senior advisor to RedBird, addressed recent events and the club’s future direction. The conference took place amidst fan protests over ownership and management decisions, just hours before the team’s departure for Saudi Arabia for their Supercoppa semifinal against Juventus.
Ibrahimovic began by acknowledging the departure of former coach Paulo Fonseca: “Before we start with Conceicao, I want to thank Fonseca for what he did and for the professional he is. We have the utmost respect for him. He couldn’t achieve consistency in results, and when you’re at Milan, results are fundamental.”
The Swedish icon admitted to a misstep in the handling of Fonseca’s exit: “We decided to dismiss him after the match, but we made a mistake in sending him to the press conference. I apologize to Paulo and to the fans.” Ibrahimovic expressed understanding for the fans’ frustrations, stating, “We understand the fans, we have the utmost respect for them. We are the first to be unsatisfied with the results, and we won’t be satisfied until we achieve our objectives.”
Regarding the club’s goals, Ibrahimovic emphasized, “The Supercoppa is one of our objectives. The responsibility is not just on the coach; we all must take responsibility. A club like Milan is always prepared for the next step.”
Introducing the new coach, Ibrahimovic praised Conceicao’s qualities: “Everyone knows who Conceicao is: he has character, he’s a winner, he has already joined mid-season and achieved great results at Porto. He has clear ideas in his head. Yesterday, as soon as he arrived, he immediately had the team working. Our job now is to provide him with everything possible.”
