French media did not mince their words after PSG fell to yet another defeat in the Champions League – this time to Bayern Munich.
Luis Enrique’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat in their visit to the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night, with Kim Min-Jae’s strike the only difference between the two sides.
PSG now sit 26th in the new-format Champions League table, putting their chances at progressing to the knock-out rounds of the competition at serious risk.
Now, amid their struggling form in Europe, they have been on the receiving end of a lambasting from their national media.
L’Equipe claimed the Parisian giants are ‘a club that no longer exists in Europe’ and blamed Ousmane Dembele’s ‘stupid sending off’ during their defeat.
They claimed that PSG – who used to boast a side filled with talent such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe – are a ‘former ambitious team’.
PSG fell to yet another defeat in the Champions League after their visit to Bayern Munich
The Bavarian giants won 1-0 to put PSG’s place in the competition at serious risk
The outlet did claim that PSG should have ‘pursued a sport policy offering it as many talents as previous seasons’ – suggesting their current crop of stars aren’t up to standard.
Though PSG are undefeated in their domestic campaigns thus far, their results in Europe leave a lot to be desired – as they now teeter on the brink of elimination.
To have a chance of going through, PSG need to win a minimum of two out of their final three matches in Europe’s elite competition.
Speaking after match Enrique said: ‘In the first half, we weren’t far behind, but we couldn’t contain their pressure. We couldn’t win the ball back in the opposing half.
‘After the break, we had reason to hope by creating danger until the hour mark, then the sending off (of Dembélé) was a serious mistake. Nevertheless, we stayed in the game until the end. In the end, Bayern deserved their victory.
‘Being coach of PSG is a great privilege. The demands I place on myself are above external pressure. My goal is to win as many titles as possible this season. In any case, I repeat myself, but all the information I glean is very useful for the future.
Asked if he feels confident that PSG can progress, Enrique said: ‘I was talking about the future in general. Everything I see in this project is interesting. I am responsible for the good and bad decisions.
Luis Enrique barked instructions from the touchline but it wasn’t enough for his PSG side
‘Rather than the three defeats, I prefer to talk about the three games we have left to play, three finals. We have conceded too many points at home against teams who have played less well than us. On the attack.
PSG may have been able to keep Harry Kane quiet on the night however it still wasn’t enough as defender Kim found a breakthrough during the match.
Kane, meanwhile, recently broke Erling Haaland’s Bundesliga record for the fastest player to 50 Bundesliga goals.
The England captain’s seventh treble since moving to Germany – taking him to 14 league goals for the season – came during their 3-0 win over Augsburg.
