ESPN's Adam Schefter clashes with rival NFL reporter who mocked his Pete Carroll story

ESPN’s Adam Schefter hit back at rival NFL reporter Mike Florio on Christmas Day for discrediting his reporting about Pete Carroll’s potential coaching comeback.

Schefter said that the 73-year-old Carroll was considering making a return to the NFL and that the Chicago Bears, new York Jets and New Orleans Saints all need coaches of his pedigree.

Pro Football Talk’s Florio then mocked Schefter’s reporting, writing: ‘Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that Carroll wants back in.

‘Which means, frankly, that Carroll’s agent has specifically told this to Schefter in the hopes that Schefter would broadcast it to the world, in the hopes of generating public opinion.

‘Then, Carroll’s agent will owe Schefter big time. And that’s how the sausage gets made.

‘It’s hard to fault Carroll’s agent for trying to use the media to get the word out about Carroll. That’s the agent’s job. It’s not the media’s job, however, to engage in quid pro quo P.R. for coaching candidates.’

Schefter responded to Florio with an understandably curt reply, saying on Christmas Day: ‘Everything you say here is 100 percent wrong. Keep up the guess work and Merry Christmas.’

Earlier in December, Schefter also hit back at Doug Gottlieb, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball coach.

Gottlieb questioned Schefter’s claim that Sacramento State has $50million in NIL money, saying: ‘Jeezus Shefty, edit what agents tell you… 0.0% chance Sac State has $50m in NIL.’

Schefter gave a bit more back on that occasion, saying: ‘The SAC-12 leading the schools NIL efforts already announced it has reached its initial goal of raising $50 million in NIL funds to strengthen the school’s case for an invitation to the PAC-12 or Mountain West conference.’

He then shared a picture of the Horizon league standings to reference Wisconsin’s 0-3 start to the season and added: ‘And Jeezus, Doug. A seven-game losing steak and last place in the Horizon League? Less time on social media and more time in the gym.’
