Conor McGregor labels Irish fighter Jono Carroll a ‘carpet licker’ for converting to Islam – as compatriot hits back at UFC star who ‘should be ashamed’ and needs ‘rehab’ after slur

Irish boxer Jono Carroll has hit back at Conor McGregor after the former UFC champion called the recent Muslim convert a ‘carpet licker’.

Carroll claimed that his compatriot should be ‘ashamed of himself’ and bemoaned the state of the man he once looked up to. The 32-year-old has previously described his conversion to Islam as ‘a long time coming’ and was pictured wearing a white robe last year in posts showing him visiting Mecca.

‘Imagine someone you looked up to as a kid like [Conor McGregor] calling you a carpet licker because I put my head to the ground every day speaking to God,’ he wrote on Instagram. 

‘Never mind disrespecting Islam this fella should be ashamed of himself. Islam has made me a better man all around. I just hope he finds peace like I have. 

‘(Someday) inshallah the thing is I already forgive you and pray for you and your family mate. Inshallah, you find your way someday. You need rehab bro. If not for yourself, do it for your family, please.

‘I’m so happy my brother Khabib Nurmagomedov (a real man) gave you a lesson for acting the hard man.

McGregor verbally attacked the 32-year-old on social media, who- then hit back in a lengthy statement

‘But you weren’t too brave tapping out when it was just the 2 of you in that cage where you???’

The latest development comes days after the McGregor used racial slurs in a now-deleted furious tirade on social media aimed at Nurmagomedov. 

The pair have a long-standing rivalry, with Nurmagomedov having beaten McGregor at UFC 229 in 2018.

The 36-year-old referenced a tweet he posted in 2019 in which he told the devout Muslim: ‘Your wife is a towel mate.’

McGregor also pointed out that the tweet was only up for 15 minutes. Following that, McGregor then hit out in a rant which included racial slurs and also referenced Nurmagomedov’s father, who passed away in 2020.

McGregor wrote: ’15 minutes I done aldo 15 seconds.

‘Show yo wife n****. Show yo kids n****. Cousin f***** motherf***** hidin mother******. Show us you and your cousins kids together because we have kids here in Ireland that wanna smoke them in competition.

‘Are they competing or what are you saying Ireland vs Dagestan? Where’s your offspring, we cant wait to see them . The best of Dagestan offspring ? Dagestan, what do we think? Is this true ?

The unhinged behavior continued into the weekend as he was filmed spitting in the face of a member of the public who showed their support for Nurmagomedov.
