Talking bad about the current NBA product is all the rage these days due to the massive increase in 3-pointers, steep decline in ratings, and persistent load management that randomly keeps superstars out of games that fans are paying heftier and heftier prices to watch both in the arena and at home.
Many are pushing for the NBA to make drastic changes to combat some of these issues, and Colin Cowherd recently shared an idea for how he’d fix the current product.
In a recent episode of “The Herd,” Cowherd said, “I would move the 3-point arc into the bench, eliminate the corner and move it back a foot. Make it part of the game, not the game.”

This idea has been thrown around a lot lately but wouldn’t change much, and if it did have an impact early on, players would undoubtedly adjust and mitigate the change quickly.
The 3-point line would have to be moved back a lot to deter players from shooting so many threes.
Removing corner threes would compress the entire game, as players would shift to a much narrower overall point of attack on offense.
It’s an overreaction to the issue at hand that is being parroted left and right, and it’s not a viable solution.
There’s no obvious solution to this issue, and it’s not clear if the uptick in threes even is an issue, but it’s becoming clear the NBA does need to do something soon.
Baseball and football have made plenty of rule changes in recent years that have helped the game, but the NBA has been much more resistant in altering its game.
