In an exclusive interview with Foot Mercato, Bayern Munich full-back Sacha Boey compares the Bundesliga with Ligue 1, French connections at FCB, and Vincent Kompany.
It’s been almost one year since the former French U20 international arrived at Bayern from Turkish side Galatasaray for €30m.
However, the full-back has been plagued with injury for most of his year and only twice in the Bundesliga last season.
So far this season, Boey has twice: once in the first game of the season in an away win at VfL Wolfsburg and once in the 1-6 thumping of Holstein Kiel.
Despite the regular playing time, the 24-year-old believes that Ligue 1 is a tougher league in comparison to the Bundesliga.
“Ligue 1 is harder because the outsiders you are playing against are there to work against you, and are very defensive. And they’re all fast, so you have to be concentrated all the game. In the Bundesliga, this is different, since a player like me can control the game at its speed, for example. In Ligue 1 I could not.”
Boey is just one of quite a few French nations in the Bayern squad. With the likes of Kingley Coman, Dayot Upamecano and Mathys Tel, Boey explains how this made settling in Munich much easier.
“Of course, without them it would have been much more complicated, I think. When I came to Bavaria, I didn’t speak German at all, so it inevitably helped me. I was also lucky enough to know Mathys Tel, because we both played in the youth of Stade Rennes.”
Boey is also happy to see Vincent Kompany in charge:
“Of course he helps me a lot. He speaks my language and he gives me a lot of advice. Of course, if a former great defender gives you tips, you’ll be better at defending.”
Bayern Munich host FC Augsburg on Friday night in the Bavarian derby.
