Paris Saint-Germain have kept a close eye on Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich. Reports from Germany reveal that a transfer nearly materialized last summer. As the January window nears, fresh updates have surfaced about a potential move.

PSG face competition, with Barcelona also showing interest in Kimmich. The Spanish club is reportedly targeting both Kimmich and Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah to bolster their midfield and defense in 2025.

Kimmich’s situation at Bayern has taken a turn since Vincent Kompany assumed the head coach role. Previously expected to leave when his contract expires next summer, the versatile German—comfortable in midfield or at right-back—now faces an uncertain future.

TBR Football reports that Bayern are determined to prevent Kimmich from departing on a free transfer next year.

Ahead of the January transfer window, The Athletic’s Seb Stafford-Bloor provided the latest on Kimmich and noted that the veteran midfielder could pursue a new challenge as he enters the final seasons of his prime years.

“Joshua Kimmich’s situation is strange,” Stafford-Bloor said. “He is one of the most decorated players in Europe, having won the Champions League and eight Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich. He is also [the] captain of Germany.

“But the future is uncertain, not least because of doubts over his best position. He is occupying his preferred spot of No. 6 (deep-lying midfielder) under Vincent Kompany, but there remains a suspicion it does not suit him or Bayern.

“Couple that with turning 30 in February and you have the prospect of him pursuing a new challenge, perhaps on his own terms. Concrete interest is hard to find, as is a straight answer from Kimmich about his future.”

The German international recently stated that he knows when he wants his future resolved, emphasizing his desire for clarity on the situation.

“I will not wait until summer,” Kimmich told ZDF SportStudio. “I will sit down in winter and then try to see the bigger picture. And make the right decision.”

Kimmich currently earns €20 million per year with Bayern Munich, and it will be interesting to see if he wants an increase in salary or could settle for that same amount but have a new challenge.
