Atalanta’s CEO Luca Percassi recently spoke to SportMediaset ahead of the Coppa Italia quarter-final match against Bologna, addressing key issue facing the club and their aspirations for the tournament.
Percassi expressed deep regret over the recent injuries to Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini, both of whom require surgery. “It’s obviously a great disappointment for us because we’re losing two players for a long period who would have given us a great hand and who didn’t deserve these two incidents,” Percassi stated. He assured that both players would return stronger than before, although the club doesn’t expect to have them back until next year.
The injuries have influenced Atalanta’s transfer strategy. Percassi noted, “We’re very happy with the players who have arrived. We didn’t think we’d intervene in defense, but in the misfortune of injuries, fortunately, the market was open.” He highlighted the signing of Daniel Maldini, saying, “Maldini is a player who fits into Atalanta’s philosophy, and as we always say in every transfer window, if there are valid opportunities for us, we’re ready to seize them to provide useful players for the manager.”
Regarding the Coppa Italia, Percassi was unequivocal about its importance to Atalanta. “The Coppa Italia is absolutely an objective,” he affirmed. “For Atalanta’s history, reaching the final is already a great achievement, even if we always want to win.” He reminded that Atalanta has reached the final three times in the last five years without securing the trophy. “We care a lot about this competition,” Percassi emphasized, hinting at the club’s determination to go all the way this time.
