Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers is a nine-time All-Star and NBA champion, but he has never been named Defensive Player of the Year.

He believes that should change, but a new interview with Shams Charania makes it clear that Davis doesn’t think it will in 2024–25.

In the interview, shared by NBACentral on X, Davis said he believes there is a “narrative” being pushed to name Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs as Defensive Player of the Year this season.

He admitted that Wembanyama is putting up amazing numbers, like his blocks per game, but thinks that isn’t the only thing that should be considered.

Even if other factors are considered, no one can deny that Wembanyama is having an amazing season.

Just months after being named Rookie of the Year, Wembanyama is averaging 24.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, and a league-high 3.9 blocks per game.

This is the second year in a row that he’s leading the rest of the league in blocks and he has improved his game in just about every single way.

Even before the season started, people were talking about Wembanyama as DPOY.

Last season, he was in the running but didn’t have enough experience to move past Rudy Gobert.

This year, it seems that the league is ready to hand him this honor and celebrate his defensive skills.

But Davis is doing incredible things as well and is averaging 25.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks.

He is having one of his best seasons ever and would probably be a frontrunner for DPOY if it wasn’t for Wembanyama.

He might think it’s a “narrative,” but others feel Wembanyama will win simply because of his skills.

It’s been a long time since the NBA has seen a player like him, and many more awards are waiting for the Spurs star.
