Aleksandar Stankovic, the youngest son of former Inter Milan star Dejan Stankovic, is currently making a name for himself on loan at Lucerne in Switzerland. The 19-year-old midfielder spoke about his journey and aspirations in a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.
Stankovic shared his excitement about his current situation, stating, “I wanted to step out of my comfort zone, and I am doing great. I have made 18 appearances, scored one goal, and provided two assists as a midfielder. I haven’t missed a single match.” His move to Lucerne was facilitated by his desire for regular playing time, and he credits his coach, Mario Frick, for instilling confidence in him.
Reflecting on his relationship with fellow player Federico Dimarco, Stankovic said, “Dimarco is a fantastic person; I consider him an older brother. I reached out to him when the opportunity in Switzerland arose, and he encouraged me to accept it.”
Stankovic reminisced about his childhood memories of celebrating titles with his family. “I have been studying my father since I can remember. I recall the Scudetto celebrations on the pitch at San Siro with him, my mother, and my brothers. It was like a fairy tale,” he said.
He also described the competitive spirit within the Stankovic household during family matches: “We would play matches with teams composed of me and my father against my brothers Filip and Stefan. Being the youngest, I always played with the strongest. None of us wants to lose, even in card games; there were constant arguments over fouls and throw-ins.”
When asked about the pressure of carrying his father’s legacy, Stankovic responded confidently: “We are aware that our surname carries weight. My father taught us to look beyond his shadow and to learn from our mistakes.”
Stankovic has always aspired to be a footballer, saying, “I never had a plan B. My first memory of football is playing under Mourinho’s watchful eye at Appiano.” He joined Inter’s youth academy at 12 years old and felt an instant connection when he donned the club’s jersey.
Despite facing challenges in youth competitions—having lost a final—he remains optimistic about future successes. “Maybe one day we will win together at Inter,” he expressed regarding playing alongside his brother Filip.
Stankovic also highlighted Hakan Calhanoglu as an idol outside of his father: “I often ask him to share some of his class with me; he gives me many valuable tips.”
As he continues to develop at Lucerne, Stankovic is focused on improving his skills and dreams of one day playing for Inter alongside his brother and Dimarco. “I am ‘Ale,’ and I dream of playing for Inter. The rest depends on me,” he concluded.
