Motherwell v Rangers prediction
Rangers will head into their opening game of the new Scottish Premiership in confident mood having booked their place in the third round of qualifying for the Champions League with a 3-1 aggregate victory over Panathinaikos, sealed by a 1-1 draw in Greece on Wednesday night.
It’s so far so good for Russell Martin as new Rangers manager after two matches in charge, having taken over in the summer following the end of Barry Ferguson’s spell as caretaker manager.
A winning start to the Premiership is crucial for Martin, who has been placed with the difficult job of preventing fierce Old Firm rivals Celtic from winning a fifth consecutive league title in Scotland, and delivering Rangers their first since 2021, and their second in 15 years.
First opponents Motherwell have also started their season as well as can be expected, picking up four wins out of four in the Scottish League Cup group campaign, recording wins over Clyde, Peterhead, Stenhousemuir and Greenock Morton to book their place in the second round.
Saturday’s game will also be Jens Berthel Askou’s first league game for his new club having joined from being Copenhagen’s assistant manager.
The Steelmen will be looking to improve on their eighth placed finish from last season, their third consecutive finish in the bottom half, a record they’ll be hoping will come to an end this season under their new Danish manager.
Rangers head into Saturday’s season opener as strong odds on favourites and are expected to take all three points back to Ibrox ahead of their Champions League clash with Czech side Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night, a 2-1 win for the Glasgow side looking most likely.

Rangers are odds on favourites for victory at Fir Park on Saturday evening and will be high on confidence after earning a draw in difficult conditions in Athens to knock Panathinaikos out of Champions League qualifying on Wednesday night.
New signing Djeidi Gassama scored two goals in that tie in a 3-1 aggregate victory, including in both legs for his new club and will be eager to make it three in three in Motherwell on Saturday.
Motherwell midfielder Callum Slattery is the only player to have been booked for the club so far this season, having done so on two different occasions, and is probably most likely to be cautioned in Saturday’s season opener.
