England head into Sunday’s final, their third in major competitions in succession, as underdogs as they prepare to take on the all conquering world champions.
Sarina Wiegman’s side have made hard work of this summer’s Euros, losing their opening game of the campaign 2-1 to France before comfortable wins over the Netherlands and Wales saw them qualify for the knockout stage in second place on the final day of the group campaign.
The Lionesses then came back from 2-0 down in their quarter final clash with Sweden, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to force extra time and penalties, edging through 3-2 on spot kicks with both sides having taken seven each.
It looked liked the defending champions were going to need penalties once again in their semi final clash against an unfancied Italy side, who led the game for the best part of an hour before Michelle Agyemang’s 96th minute equaliser forced the game into extra time.
Penalties looked a certainty as extra time played out before Chloe Kelly’s rebounded her own saved penalty into the net to send the Lionesses through to their third consecutive major final with their fourth win on the trot.

Spain head into Sunday’s final as odds on favourites for victory as they look to become the first team, men or women, to hold the World Cup, Euros and Nations League titles simultaneously.
Aitana Bonmati’s 113th minute winner sent Spain through to their first ever Euros final, sealing their 10th consecutive victory in the process after convincing wins in all four of their previous games this tournament.
Montse Tome’s side have been the team to beat from the start of the tournament, heading into the summer as strong favourites for their first Euros title and established their dominance with 5-0 and 6-2 victories over Portugal and Belgium to kickstart their Group B campaign.
A subsequent 3-1 victory over Italy was followed by a 2-0 quarter final win over hosts Switzerland before their titanic semi final against eight-time European champions Germany on Wednesday night.
La Roja may have won 13 of their last 14 matches in all competitions, including all of their last 10, but their only blip in that record came in a 1-0 defeat against England at Wembley in February earlier this year.
There’s been nothing to separate the two sides in their recent head to head battles, each winning two of their last four meetings with each other, though Spain did win the most recent match at the start of last month in the Nations League in Barcelona.
