Gerwyn Price declined to speak about his heated exchange with Daryl Gurney in their fiery World Matchplay clash.

The Welshman overcame DGurney 10-7 in a thrilling first round encounter that was brimming with drama and needle.

Gurney took his chance to poke the bear in the ninth leg when he was down 6-2.

After he pinned double 16 to reduce the deficit to 6-3, Gurney appeared to mock Price’s celebration.

Price, one of the most passionate players on the tour, lived up to his nickname of ‘The Iceman’ in the moment as he refused to bite.

But he would soon get his moment to fire back at Gurney.

And fire back he did.

After he pinned double 12 to take out the match, Price turned to the crowd and let out an almighty roar along with a number of fist pumps.

As he went to shake the hands of the officials the camera then cut to Gurney, who once again mocked the actions of his fired-up rival.

Unsurprisingly, it all came to a head when it was time to shake hands.

With the firmest of handshakes, Price cut a steely look at Gurney and said: “Well played, buddy.”

The manner of the handshake left Gurney a little perplexed, as he called after Price on stage.

But Price was evidently more keen to celebrate with the Blackpool crowd once more, as he fist-pumped some more and even dished out a cheeky hip thrust.

‘The Iceman’ soon exited, leaving a still-bemused Gurney to remain on stage all on his own to throw some of his flights to fans.

Speaking after the contest, Sky Sports’ Mark Webster commented on the angsty scenes that ensued.

“Gerwyn Price was taking liberty to Daryl Gurney’s mimicking of him,” Webster said.

“They’re feisty characters, aren’t they? It’ll get sorted, I’m sure of it. It was just a feisty handshake.

“Let’s not take it away from what was a brilliant game. Price kept it in check until he got that winning leg and Gerwyn Price gets the last laugh.”

Although there was plenty of fire on the oche, Price was keen to leave the drama where it transpired as he opted not to answer questions about the fracas.

“I’ve learnt to try and keep my emotions intact at key points sometimes”, Price said.

“I did today in two or three legs where my head was going to blow off. I just had to keep it in.

“I was beating myself up about missed opportunities. I just give myself a kick up the backside.”

talkSPORT’s Mark Wilson believes Gurney was being disrespectful with his antics in the match and revealed that Price did not want to go into what happened.

He told talkSPORT Breakfast: “You know what Gerwyn Price is like, letting out the big roar, giving it the big one when he’s playing.

Price made light of the incident on social media

“He was letting Gurney have it and Gurney came back into it. Gurney was like what’s he doing here? And I think he was a little bit disrespectful.

“Price was really upset at the end and refused to talk about it. He was really disappointed but I think this is one that will go on and on, he certainly wasn’t happy with Darrell Gurney at the end.

“When they shook hands, he nearly pulled him over, it was going to kick off at one point.”

It seemed like he had cooled down later in the evening, though, as he posted on Instagram: “Have to be careful these days I’m down to light cruiserweight.”
