Rangers v Panathinaikos prediction
Rangers kick their competitive season off on Tuesday night with a Champions League second qualifying round first leg match against Greek side Panathinaikos at Ibrox.
The match will be the first under in the Russell Martin era after taking over following the end of Barry Ferguson’s spell as caretaker manager at the end of last season.
The Glasgow side begin their journey of having to manoeuvre their way through three rounds of qualifying in order to reach the league phase of the Champions League for the first time in three years and just the second time in 15.
Martin’s side have had two preseason friendlies to prepare for his first competitive match as manager since a 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham as Southampton boss in December last year, drawing 2-2 at home to Belgian side Club Brugge at Ibrox before playing out a 1-1 draw with English League One side Barnsley behind closed doors.
Tuesday’s match will give home fans a chance to see some of the Gers’ eight new signings, notably the highly rated centre back Nasser Djiga on loan from Wolves, new full back Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth, as well as exciting Colombian winger Oscar Cortes who’s signed from Lens.
Panathinaikos travel from Athens to Glasgow looking to cause an upset on their way to appearing the league phase of the Champions League for the first time in 15 years.
Managed by former Benfica manager Rui Vitoria, who has won two league titles in Portugal and one in Saudi Arabia, Panathinaikos finished second in Super League Greece last season, 16 points behind fierce rivals Olympiacos.
Last season saw the Greek side reach the last 16 of the Conference League before being eliminated by Fiorentina, while Rangers reached the quarter finals of the Europa League before falling to Athletic Bilbao.
Tuesday’s bout will be the first meeting of the two teams since meeting in the Round of 32 of the UEFA Cup in 2008, when a 1-1 draw in Athens sent the Scottish side through on away goals after a goalless draw in the first leg at Ibrox en route to reaching the final.
Rangers are odds on favourites for victory in Martin’s first game for the club in front of their home fans and are expected to take a lead back to Athens for next Wednesday’s return leg, with a 3-1 home victory seeming a likely possibility at Ibrox.
