Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt might not have beef — but that also doesn’t mean they’re close.
The actor, 49, explained in an interview with Variety published on Saturday, July 19, that he and his I Know What You Did Last Summer costar “run in different circles.”
“I hadn’t seen her since we wrapped the second movie in ’98, but we care a lot about these characters, and it was all still there,” he told the publication. “After we finished that first scene, we had a chance to say, ‘Oh, you have kids. And you have kids.’”
He continued, “Honestly, I think the first scene we share in this movie, where Ray and Julie con- front the reality of their relationship, is the best work we’ve done of all three. I’m really proud of it. Our director, Jenn Robinson, three-dimensionalized these characters.”

Fan-driven theories about an alleged discord between Prinze and Hewitt were also debunked by director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who wrote on X on Saturday, “[Hewitt and Prinze] absolutely shot their scenes together. hope this helps” after a fan theorized the pair worked separately.
The rumors seem to be tied to a decades-long story of an alleged issue between Hewitt and former costar Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is also married to Prinze. Despite repeated denials, many fans believe Hewitt asked producers to kill off Gellar’s character in the original film’s 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
Those stories were fueled by the fact that Gellar and Hewitt were not photographed together at the July 2025 premiere of the latest installment in the franchise.
In a December 2024 interview on the “I’ve Never Said This Before” podcast, Hewitt commented, “I was 18. They were not taking script notes from me, guys.”
She continued, “All of us were in that experience together and, kind of, figuring it all out and everything. I root for her and Freddie and think it’s the cutest thing in the world that they’ve been married for 100 years, and have kids. It’s adorable. It’s just been really funny to see all of this stuff that people think.”

Gellar has been more direct when asked about her involvement in the 2025 movie. When asked by People if she’d be involved, she pointedly told the outlet, “I am dead.”
“My best friend [Jennifer] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,” she added. “So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”
