The Brooklyn Nets made a somewhat-surprising decision on Thursday when they waived guard Cam Thomas prior to Thursday's 3 PM ET deadline for teams to conduct trades. After Brooklyn waived Thomas, both and the Nets had the chance to give their side of the situation with Thomas being excited for what his next step in the NBA will be now that he's a free-agent.
"Super excited ready to actually help and contribute to another team. My next team is getting elite scoring, good playmaking and a good combo guard," Thomas said after his release, according to Andscape's Marc J. Spears. Thomas was waived after spending his first four seasons with the team following his being selected with the 27th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez gave his thoughts on Thomas prior to Thursday's matchup at the Orlando Magic.
"Right now, this point is a new opportunity for everybody, and I think that is extremely valuable," Fernandez said of Thomas during Thursday's pregame interview. "Obviously, I appreciate his time with us. I'm a better coach than I was before. It's been fun to coach somebody that can score at the level he can score, and now, he has the opportunity to choose where he wants to go and and make the impact that he wants to make. I'm so happy for him, and we all want to wish him luck."
SNY's Ian Begley added on X after the news of Thomas being waived that "Cam Thomas and his group were hoping to find another opportunity at the deadline." While Thomas was most likely hoping for a trade so that he could keep his current contract, it seems that it was more important for him to choose his next team. "With no trade in place, they get what they’d hoped for with BKN waiving him today after deadline, sources confirm," Begley continued.
Thomas, 24, ends his Nets tenure this season after averaging 15.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 39.9% from the field and 32.5% from three-point land. Thomas' best seasons with the team were from 2023 to 2025 when he averaged 22.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per contest on .441/.359/.864 shooting splits in 91 games played over that span.

The Nets have now ended a partnership with Cam Thomas that began in 2021 when Brooklyn selected him with the 27th overall pick. Thomas had his first foray into free-agency this past summer, but he decided to take his $6 million QO. Now, Thomas can choose his next team. https://t.co/Dy52Eb61os
