England won arguably the most bonkers match of the Sarina Wiegman-era – reaching the Euro 2025 semi-finals with a shootout for the ages.
The win over Sweden extracted all of Wiegman’s tactical nous and her players brilliance, booking a final four showdown with Italy.

The Lionesses went a goal down against Sweden after just 104 seconds, and deservedly found themselves two down at half-time.
talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham was left embarrassed by England’s performance as he hit out at the Euro holders during the break.
He said: “Absolutely rubbish.”
Before adding: “England have been hopeless, pathetic, bordering on embarrassing, going out without a fight as things stand, without a plan, without a clue.
“I cannot for the life of me how you turn in a performance like that? England have been absolutely dreadful.”
Whatever was said in England’s changing room at half-time appeared to do the trick as they looked to be a team transformed.
Two goals in two remarkable second half minutes from Michelle Agyemang and Lucy Bronze levelled things up.
With the game going to extra-time, nether side were able to find the breakthrough, which lead to the most chaotic penalty shootout.
England triumphed 3-2, with nine out of 14 spot-kicks between the two teams failing to find the back of the net.
Sweden twice had the chance to win the shootout, but missed on both occasions, with Smilla Holmberg’s effort over the bar sending England into the last-four.

Here’s how Durham rated and slated the Lionessess in what will go down as one of the most dramatic matches in European Championship history.
Hampton the hero
With two penalty saves in the shootout, Hannah Hampton has become an instant England icon.
She was also influential in Sweden only scoring two on the night to keep England in the tie.
Awarding Hampton a 9/10 rating, Durham said: “Some crucial saves, a few crazy moments as well, and then a hero in the shootout.”

Looney Toone
It wasn’t a performance England fans have come to expect from Ella Toone.
The midfielder failed to have any real influence in the match which led to her being hauled off in the 70th minute.
England were trailing 2-0 at the time, with the decision to remove the Manchester United star proving to be a turning point in the match.
Given a brutal 2/10, Durham remarked: “Had a chance to shoot, squared it to a Swedish player. Summed it up.”

Al or nothing
Arsenal forward Alessia Russo continues to impress this summer.
Fresh off the back of winning the Champions League, England will be praying Russo keeps up her form should they wish to win back-to-back European tournaments.
Given a 7/10, Russo’s relentless workrate was a joy to behold.
Durham stated: “Non-stop work, absolute commitment to the cause.
“Missed two chances in extra-time, but then the right mentality to bury her penalty.”

A message to the boss
On another England would have crashed out, and Wiegman knows her side are immensely fortunate to still be in the tournament.
With Italy next up, a similar start to the match will surely see England crash out.
Handed a 3/10 for her tactics and approach to the match, Durham has been left mystified as to how England got it so wrong against Sweden.
He said: “She’ll claim the subs worked, but why so late?
“And more importantly why were England so bad for 70+ minutes?”
