To say Jaylen Brown wasn’t happy with the officiating on Saturday is an understatement.
The Boston Celtics wing took to the media following his team’s 100-95 loss to the San Antonio Spurs to discuss the referee’s impact on the contest.
“It’s the same sh– every time we play a good team, it’s like they refuse to make a call,” Brown said, per Clutch Points’ Daniel Donabedian. “… And that’s just extremely frustrating. … Every time we play a good team, the inconsistency is crazy.
“I’ll take the (expletive) fine. Curtis, all them dudes were terrible tonight. I don’t care, they can fine me whatever they want. It’s crazy, every time we play a good team it’s the same bulls—.”
The Spurs were awarded 20 free throws on Saturday, while the Celtics only got to the line four times. Brown didn’t get a single free-throw attempt, but still managed to post 27 points in the loss.
“I’m irate at how they officiated the game today,” Brown said. “If we can’t get to the free-throw line and teams are allowed to be physical and bump us off our spots, it’s hard to win games like that. … Inconsistency is (expletive) crazy. Give me the fine.”
Brown typically averages the ninth-most free throws in the NBA, averaging 7.4 per contest entering Saturday. However, the Celtics as a whole do not get to the line much; they average the fewest free throws attempted per game in the entire league with 18.9.
The NBA regularly fines players who use profanity during interviews. Suns guard Jalen Green was recently fined $25,000 for using profanity during a teammate’s post-game interview.
Despite the lack of calls, the Celtics still sit second in the East with a 24-14 record. They return to action on Monday against the Indiana Pacers.
