The Buffalo Bills know their first stop on the playoff road trip. The next destination still has to be circled on the map.
Buffalo opens the AFC playoffs at the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m. Sunday in a wild-card game. If the Bills win, their divisional-round matchup will be determined later Sunday night or Monday night, depending on the outcome of other playoff games.
Here’s how the scenarios break down.
Who will the Bills play in the divisional round?
If the Bills beat the Jaguars, there are three possible opponents in the AFC Divisional Round:
- Denver Broncos
- Pittsburgh Steelers
- Houston Texans
Which team the Bills would face depends on the results of the Sunday night and possibly Monday night wild-card games.
Bills playoff scenarios for next game
If the Bills defeat the Jaguars in the wild-card round, there are two scenarios for their next playoff game:
If the Patriots win Sunday night
- Patriots defeat the Chargers
- Bills would play the Denver Broncos in the divisional round
If the Chargers win Sunday night
- Los Angeles Chargers defeat the New England Patriots
- The Bills would play the winner of No. 4 Steelers vs. No. 5 Texans in the divisional round.
The Steelers and Texans meet Monday night, meaning Buffalo’s next opponent may not be known until after that game concludes.
When is the Bills' next game?
The divisional round games will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 and Sunday, Jan. 18.
Will the Bills play at home or away next round?
On the road, regardless of opponent.
The Bills are the No. 6 seed and cannot host a playoff game in the wild-card or divisional rounds.
The only scenario in which Buffalo could host a playoff game is an AFC Championship matchup against the No. 7 Los Angeles Chargers on Jan. 25.
Otherwise, the Bills would remain on the road all the way until potentially reaching Super Bowl 60, which will be played at Levi's Stadium on Feb. 8.
What is the format of the playoffs?
In the wild-card round:
- No. 2 hosts No. 7
- No. 3 hosts No. 6
- No. 4 hosts No. 5
In the divisional round:
- The No. 1 seed hosts the lowest remaining seed
- The other two wild-card winners play each other, with the higher seed hosting
The higher-seeded team hosts the conference championship game. The Super Bowl is played at a predetermined site.
